BOWLS

The Terry Gardiner Memorial Trophy for men and the Blair Trophy for women will be at stake in the Bowls Gisborne East Coast centre open triples this weekend.

Play starts at 8.30am tomorrow on Te Karaka Bowling Club’s greens.

Unfortunately, entry numbers are well down on previous seasons.

The close proximity of two major club tournaments — Gisborne’s Burton Cup Classic Fours last weekend and Poverty Bay’s Val Smith Mixed Pairs coming up next weekend — could have something to do with the poor turnout.

All centre triples games will be played over 18 ends with a two-hour time limit.

The men’s event has only seven entries so a full round-robin tournament will be held with four rounds on Saturday and three on Sunday. Each team will also have a bye over the two days.

Once again the favourites will be the host club’s David File (skip), Steve Goldsbury and Duncan Macpherson.

However, the round-robin format has produced upsets in the past and the other six teams entered will be in with a chance.

Gisborne Bowling Club will be represented by Charlie Ure (skip), Bob McIlroy and Robin Jefferson, along with Mal Trowell (skip), Arthur Hawes and Bruce Easton, and Ricky Miller (skip), Maurice Taylor and Ashli Ferris.

The rest of the field includes Poverty Bay’s Steve Berezowski (skip), Tam Buckingham and Andrew Ball, and clubmate Larry Kaloucava skipping two Gisborne Bowling Club players, Kahu Kerekere and Bruce Gledhill.

Te Karaka regulars Arthur Baty (skip), Adam McIlroy and Lofty Hurrell complete the seven-team entry.

As only five entries were received for the women’s event, a full round-robin tournament will be held with three rounds to be played on Saturday and two rounds on Sunday. All teams will have a bye at some stage.

Kahutia Bowling Club will be represented by Betty Herring (skip), Marie Wright and Anita Vaotuua.

The rest of the field is dominated by teams from Gisborne Bowling Club, with regulars Carol Hawes (skip), Lorna Reeve and Lesley McIntosh, as well as Queenie Takurua (skip), Age Smiler and Barbara Gibson, and Ginny Sherriff (skip), Kay Goldsbury and Beverly Davy.

Completing an even field are Bobbie Beattie (skip) with Karen Higgins and Te Karaka’s Janet Baty.
