Teams skipped by Glenys Whiteman and Steve Goldsbury won two of the major lawn bowls trophies contested in the Gisborne-East Coast centre.

Both tournaments were held on Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s all-weather surface.

Whiteman, Marie Wright, Dayvinia Mills and Francie Adair won the Ella Gibson Trophy for women.

Ella Gibson and her sister Vera were prominent members of the Riverside Women’s Bowling Club, and the trophies for winners and runners-up of the women’s event bear their names.

Victory for her team gave Whiteman her 60th centre title in the Gisborne-East Coast centre.

Runners-up were Queenie Takurua (skip), Anne Day, Barbara Gibson and Angela Gibson-Sam.

The winners and runners-up both won four out of five round-robin games — six teams entered — but Whiteman’s team won more ends and had a better differential.

They won 42 ends and had a differential of plus 33, compared with Takurua’s 39 ends won and differential of +19.

Goldsbury, Jamey Ferris, Ricky Miller and Robin Jefferson won the Peace Shield, a trophy commemorating the declaration of peace after World War 1 and first contested in 1920.

Eight teams entered the competition, and Goldsbury’s team won all seven of their games, with 21 match points, 56 ends won and a differential of +73.

Runners-up David File (skip), Bruno Lourie, Lofty Hurrell and Duncan Macpherson had six wins, 18 match points, 51 ends won and a differential of +46.

The runners-up won the Slight Shield, a trophy awarded since 1945.

The team entered by Mark Bain but skipped by Vern Marshall had five wins, 15 match points, 50 ends won and a differential of +22.
