Former Gisborne Boys’ High School student and Canadian time trial champion Matthew Ney (Team Canada) has won the 5415-kilometre Tour de l’Abitibi in Quebec.

He rolled in 34th in the bunch sprint for the seventh and final stage of the race on Sunday.

Alejandro Che (Team USA) took his second straight stage win, ahead of Satoaki Nagashima (Japan) and Paul Picard (France). Jonathan Hinse (Team Canada) was the top Canadian for the stage, finishing fifth.

Despite multiple efforts, no breakaway succeeded in staying away in the 120.5-kilometre stage that began in La Sarre and finished in the host town of Amos.

Ney, 18, took the title and Brown Jersey ahead of Team Canada teammate Ethan Powell, the winner of Stage 1, by 14 seconds, with Che finishing third at 48 seconds. Team Canada also won the Team GC.
