The hockey season starts a night earlier this week due to the Matariki celebrations on Friday, and what a start it promises to be.

Tonight, Paikea front up to Ngatapa — two teams in top form.

Hockey commentator Tony Scragg says it's a perfect match-up at this stage of the season. It kicks off a weekend that includes celebrations around three new life members.

Tomorrow night, Dee Tureia, Marlene Nikora and Ngaio Haenga will be inducted as life members of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association.

On the playing side tonight, Scragg reckons the Paikea-versus-Ngatapa game should be a nice close tussle.

“Ngatapa should be hot favourites on recent form, but the Ladies in Pink tend to lift their game when they play them — certainly in the past few years they have.”

Tomorrow night, two games will be played following the life membership induction.

“Those games will be a fitting testament to the achievements and service of those three women,” Scragg said.

At 6pm, GMC Kowhai will look to make it three wins in a row, but that might be tough because they face in-form and unbeaten INA Contracting GMC Green.

“GMC Green should be too strong,” Scragg said.

“They proved last weekend the strength and power they have across their whole team, in beating Waituhi by such a big score (16-0).

“On the other hand, Kowhai's confidence will be coming off back-to-back wins.

“It will be a testament to Marlene and Ngaio, who have played for the GMC club.”

At 7.30pm, Waituhi will play YMP B.

“That game will feature one of our new life members in Marlene (Nikora) who will be playing for Waituhi,” Scragg said.

“After she retired last year they dragged her back again this season, and that shows the mana she has given to the Waituhi club.

“YMP B will want to take away the points for their beloved Nanny Dee (Tureia).”

The Saturday programme begins at 12.30pm with Te Aowera in action against Amber Dental Gisborne Girls' High School.

“Girls' High showed last weekend they have what's needed for a win against TA,” Scragg said.

“But TA will certainly make them work for the points.”

At 2pm it will be Lytton Old Boys HPY Advisors on the Hain Farming Turf with Waituhi in the men's competition.

“That should be a good close match.

“LOB will try to bounce back from their loss to YMP A last weekend, so watch out Waituhi. LOB will be coming at you.”

The 3.30pm game has YMP B up against LOB Masters.

“That's likely to be another close game, providing YMP B can get numbers on the turf.

“Meanwhile, the Masters will be looking for their first match win on the turf.”

The day ends with the 5pm encounter between Gisborne Boys' High School and YMP A.

“That's the men's game of the day,” Scragg said.

“All the stars will be on deck for YMP, and it will be a really good test for the Wade Manson-coached Boys' High side.”

• The life membership induction starts at 5.30pm tomorrow in the Poverty Bay Hockey and Cricket Pavilion.

“We would like to invite life members, Poverty Bay Hockey members, our sponsors and guests to the induction ceremony for our new life members,” operations manager Louise Teneti said.

“Their past and present teammates, family and their guests are all welcome.”
