Thomson makes Scotland squad

GISBORNE-raised Blade Thomson had another head knock in his debut for Scotland last month but that hasn’t stopped him being named in their Rugby World Cup squad.

In the past year, concussion problems have beset the loose forward, who has suffered from headaches. Getting over that enabled him to take the field at No.8 against France at Murrayfield.

Thomson put in an impressive shift and the Scots won 17-14.

He had to leave the field, though, and failed a head injury assessment.

Thomson is now considered fit again and Scotland coach Gregor Townsend praised the athletic forward’s performance on debut.

“Blade Thomson played very well,” Townsend said.

“He was aggressive in defence and carried well.

“He made the right decisions. Whether it was to carry and set up a ruck or get in behind the defence, he was excellent.”

Thomson, 28, attended Gisborne Boys’ High School and went on to play rugby for Taranaki, the Hurricanes and the Maori All Blacks, before moving to Welsh club Scarlets last year.

He is eligible for Scotland through his paternal grandfather, Robert.
