Poverty Bay Kayak Club member Quaid Thompson fell just short of a medal at the Canoe Sprint Junior and Under-23 World Championships in Bulgaria overnight.

Thompson finished fourth in the A final of the u23 men’s K1 1000 metres at Plovdiv.

He crossed the finish line in 3 minutes 43.682 seconds, 0.6 of a second behind third-placed Jon Amund Vold of Norway.

The final was won by Sweden’s Martin Nathell in 3:41.858.

Several other Poverty Bay kayakers were racing.

Britney Ford and Kim Thompson were part of the u23 women’s crew who finished ninth in the final of the K4 500.

Alex Bermingham’s crew were fifth in their junior women’s K4 500 semifinal, and were eliminated.

Sam Ferkins placed fifth in the junior men’s K1 1000 semifinal, putting him into the C final, in which he was sixth.

Alicia Hoskin is in Day 3 action. She is competing in the junior women’s K1 and K2 500, while Ferkins is in the junior men’s K4 500.?
