GISBORNE Thistle’s Central Federation League game against Red Sox Manawatu, set down for Skoglund Park in Palmerston North tomorrow, has been postponed.

Thistle coach Matt Hastings said that Central Football’s Manawatu operations manager, Donald Piper, had told him the grounds in Palmerston North were under water, snow had fallen on the saddle road being used in place of the indefinitely closed Manawatu Gorge, and a lot of rain, sleet and cold weather were still expected in the next two days.

Hastings was unsure how the postponement would affect Thistle’s season. After the game scheduled for tomorrow, Thistle were to play Massey, also away, and then have a bye.

A top-four competition has been proposed for August, and Thistle look good prospects for inclusion in that.

“The league effectively has six weeks left,” Hastings said.

“It would be nice to play games and end the season the way we started it.”

On the local scene, all football has been postponed.

Central Football Gisborne operations manager Neil Aitkenhead said the amount of rain in the past two weeks had been too much for the grounds to be playable.
