READY TO GO: Gisborne surf lifesaver Abby Falwasser-Logan awaits the start of an event at the representative challenge.Alana McIsaac/Surf Life Saving New Zealand picture
GISBORNE finished third in the youth division of the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Representative Challenge after a day of close racing at Waimarama Beach in Hawke’s Bay on Sunday.
Taranaki won the division for athletes aged 14 to 18, with a points tally of 125. In second place, fivepoints back, were Bay of Plenty.
Capital Coast of Wellington won the open division, less than 10 points ahead of second-placed Bay of Plenty. Taranaki were third.
Capital Coast took top points in most of the team events, including the oceanperson relay (which comprised swim, ski and board elements), board rescue, tube rescue and ski relay.
They had the added bonus of Olympians Marty McDowell and Kayla Imrie, and Black Fins (New Zealand lifesaving team members) Stephen Kent and Samantha Lee competing in their team.
