HOCKEY

SOLID wins to both the student teams and more than 40 goals in the other five matches were highlights of weekend hockey on the LJ Hooker turf at Harry Barker Reserve.

Gisborne Boys’ High School beat Lytton Old Boys Masters 5-2, after they drew 3-3 last time out.

“It was one of the best performances I have seen from Boys’ High,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.

“They started and finished strongly, and basically shut the Masters out of the game.”

The students were 3-0 up after 17 minutes.

Scragg’s son Aiden suffered a nasty head knock in the game, needed stitches in hospital, and has made a good recovery.

Amber Dental Gisborne Girls’ High School defeated GMC Kowhai 4-1 in the game of the round.

“Girls’ High are showing some good form,” Scragg said. “That was their third win on the trot.

“They have obviously developed strong self-belief.”

The other games went the way of form.

THC scored nine goals against YMP B, with four of them to Chris Fox and a hat-trick to Troy Wharepapa.

“That was a good way for THC to bounce back from their defeat against YMP A.”

The YMP A men’s team were too good for LOB NZ Fruits, winning a tighter-than-expected game 6-2.

“It was good to see the Fruits show their competitive edge against a very good YMP team,” Scragg said. “That is something that has been lacking in their play.”

Scragg said the LOB side would have taken some confidence out of that result.

In the women’s matches, YMP A beat YMP B 14-0.

Courtney Onekawa and Nancy Tarawa led the scoring with four goals each, and Toni Halley scored a brace.

“It was always going to be tough for whoever faced them after YMP A’s first loss for some time,” Scragg said.

GMC Green retained their place at the top of the women’s table with an 8-0 victory over JNL Paikea.

Kelsey Teneti grabbed a hat-trick.

“Paikea kept them at bay in the first half but then GMC cut loose in the second period,” Scragg said.

The Green Machine played really well and scored some good goals.

“Credit still goes to Paikea goalkeeper Hannay Duncan, who defended stoutly. She played well.”

Ben Holden Fencing Ngatapa beat GMC Gold 6-0 and Elise Levy picked up a hat-trick.

“Ngatapa made a slow start but nailed the result in the second half,” Scragg said.

“They showed why they might be a team to watch in the women’s competition.”
