THE GMC Green team fell at the last hurdle but they did claim a top individual honour at the Poverty Bay hockey prize-giving on Saturday.

GMC team member Kelsey Teneti was named female player of the year and winner of the Upshot Memorial Trophy for outstanding contribution by a player under 16 years old. It underlined a standout season for the multi-talented sportswoman.

Fourteen-year-old Teneti, the youngest winner of the player-of-the-year trophy, was among three nominees for the award.

The others were Amy England, also of GMC Green, and Nancy Tarawa, whose YMP A team beat GMC 3-2 in the premier women’s grand final.

The club season is over but the action continues for Teneti. She will be a vital cog in the Lytton High School team heading to Taupo for the North Island mixed secondary schools tournament next week.

Young players also featured prominently in the male player-of-the-year category.

Lytton Old Boys A goalkeeper Lachlan Vause — also in the Lytton High team for the mixed tournament — and Kohere Tupara, of premier men’s runners-up YMP A, were named joint winners.
