Enterprise Swim Team of Gisborne was overall top club on combined points at the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay winter championships in Hastings.

The team also had most overall senior points for swimmers 13 years and over.

Results from the championships showed that the Enterprise Swim Team/Martin Swimming Programme continued to evolve and produce high-calibre athletes, head coach Matt Martin said.

The emphasis on a team/family culture was reflected in the results that Enterprise swimmers had produced over many years.

In the 30 years the championships had been running, Enterprise had been overall top team 19 times — a satisfying result for the coaches and staff during that time.

“Quality is always our goal,” Martin said.

“Preparing our swimmers for bigger events such as national championships is the most important thing for us.”

Emily Horne, 14, was a classic example of promising swimmers being identified and developed into champions, Martin said.

“Emily smashed the 14-year girls’ 100-metre butterfly record that belonged to Enterprise’s Olivia Corrin, who was no slug in this event,” he said.

“Emily’s time was 1 minute 5.60 seconds. The old record was 1:06.50.”

Tyler Finau produced a stunning 1500m freestyle to obliterate — by more than 32 seconds — the old 14-year girls’ record, which stood for 12 years, Martin said.

“It was great to introduce some of our future stars to out-of-town competition. Eight-year-old Cole Alexander showed real promise in the nine-and-under boys’ division, with several medals.

“And Chloe Moore, Emily Petro and Ben Plowman enjoyed their first regional medals for the team in the nine-and-under and 10-year age groups.”
