Gisborne Trampoline Club took a 31-strong team to the Midlands Trampoline and Tumbling Champs in Rotorua last weekend.

They returned with 27 medals —15 gold, five silver and seven bronze.

The club had one of the largest teams that had travelled to the competition. Many of them were competing for the first time.

All performed well but some stood out.

Porsha Warren-Hillman, competing in the 10-and-under age group, was again outstanding. She won gold in tumbling, trampoline and double mini.

Head coach Doug Callahan said she would keep building on her strengths to ready herself for the national stage, where she would meet her South Island competitors for the first time.

James van Aswegen distinguished himself again by taking the gold in trampoline and double mini. He, too, would hope to replicate those placings in the nationals at Invercargill, Callahan said.

Nina Buscke stepped up to take bronze in trampoline — her first medal, obtained for a great effort and well-deserved placing.

“Nina and James van Aswegen are developing into amazing coaches and are working well through their coaching exams,” Callahan said.

“Their attitude to the sport presents them as excellent role models, and the young athletes learn so much through their example.”

Callahan said he greatly appreciated their help.

“Another one to watch is Haley Rolls, who won three gold medals competing in Youth International division trampoline, tumbling and DMT (double mini tramp),” Callahan said.

“Three young ones competing for the first time out of Gisborne deserve special mention. These were Lucy Spence, Hamiora Pardoe and Thomas Bull.

“All three competed in the eight-and-under division with Hamiora and Thomas collecting both gold and silver medals and Lucy, silver and bronze, so they had the age group well covered — a tremendous first-time competition.”

All who competed in the club's huge team deserved congratulations on their great attitude, Callahan said. Thanks were also due to Gisborne's Natalya Barber, who judged through two days of competition.

“We have 10 who have met national level entry. They are Tegan Hayward, Lily Arnold, Haley Rolls, James van Aswegen, Ngature Tuhura, Oliver Tilghman, Jaxon Pardoe, Porsha Warren-Hillman, Bella Campbell-Reidy and Tyler Sheldrake. Others could be added to that list with a step up in their level at the next competition at the Icon Club in Auckland next weekend.”
