CROQUET

A team from Barry Memorial Croquet Club exceeded their expectations when they travelled to the Bay of Plenty to play against players from the Tauranga club.

After 28 golf croquet matches, the Gisborne club ended up winning by 19 matches to nine.

The size of the margin was unexpected because, although the Barry club won by 16 matches to nine last time the clubs met, this time Tauranga included some of their top players, with handicaps well below those of the Gisborne players.

While all players contributed to the win, Dave and Chris Newton did particularly well, with four wins each.

In September, players from the Barry club are entered in open tournaments in Hamilton, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay.

The club has relaid two of its lawns in preparation for the summer season.

On Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16, the club will hold open days from 1pm each day for anyone wishing to try the game.

Equipment and tuition will be provided, but flat-soled shoes — or even jandals — must be worn.
