TRIATHLON

CAMBRIDGE-based Gisborne triathlete Tayler Reid is in the New Zealand team to contest the World Triathlon Series Mixed Relay Edmonton event on July 21.

The other members of the six-member team are Nicole van der Kaay, Ainsley Thorpe, Sophie Corbidge, Hayden Wilde and Sam Ward.

Those competing and the order in which they will race will be decided closer to the event.

In triathlon mixed relays, athletes must complete a super-sprint triathlon — a 300-metre swim, 6.6-kilometre bike ride and 1km run — before tagging off a teammate. The order is always female-male-female-male.

So far, the team have finished third in Abu Dhabi and seventh in Nottingham.

They face a testing travel schedule ahead of the mixed relay Olympic test event in Tokyo on August 18, but Triathlon New Zealand performance general manager Hamish Carter says they need to race all the events to give themselves the best chance of qualifying for the Olympics.
