Tairawhiti students in the medals on day 1 of nationals

Tairawhiti paddlers bagged several top placings on day one of the 2018 National Secondary School Waka Ama Championships.

Competition got under way yesterday at Lake Tikitapu in Rotorua.

Gisborne Girls’ High School finished the day leading the overall medal tally, with two golds and a silver.

Gisborne Boys’ and Gisborne Girls’ High mixed crew won the W12 250m under-16 championship race.

Gabibreill Wainohu (GGHS) won the u16 girls’ W1 250m final, with Te Aomihia Pewhairangi of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Horouta Wananga third.

Silver medals went to Rangi-Riana Williams (GGHS) in the u19 girls’ W1 250m, and Anaru Paenga-Morgan (GBHS) in the u16 boys’ W1 250m.

Lytton collected gold in two plate finals — Keri Mankelow in the u19 girls’ W1 250m and Kelsey Teneti in the u16 girls’ W1 250m.
