SUCCESSFUL coaches will often say “it was team effort” and Enterprise Swim team head coach Gary Martin wasn’t about to break with tradition after his club won the Seniors Cup (14 years and over age group) at the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay summer champs at the Olympic pool.
“The swimmers and staff of the club owe a huge thank you to the people who work so hard behind the scenes to make events like this happen,” said Martin.
“They are commonly called The Engine Room, and never a truer phrase was said in this case.
“Looking back on last year’s results we never won any of the major points awards and now we have the seniors trophy.”
Martin said the club focus was on the future “aiming for national honours with the seniors”.
“All our coaches — Julie McLaughlin, Matt Martin, Jonette Maynard, Josh Taylor-Martin and Shona Martin — are all on the same wavelength.
“Our management team of Jo Patterson and Kristen Simmons are experienced and we have been working together for a very long time, which means all our swimmers are taken care of and on the ball as far as getting to the start line on time is concerned.
“Our success at the meet was very much a team effort, not only from the swimmers but the administration.
“The parents are very supportive of our programme.”
Martin said the “perform well during the course of the three-day meet philosophy” paid off when Enterprise came from 120 points behind going into the final day to overhaul Napier’s Aquahawks.
“We were behind the eight ball but we had a chat with the team and they really dug deep, particularly in the final session and they did a superb job rolling over the top of Aquahawks, particularly in the final three events.
This also created a great atmosphere to finish the meet with teammates up on the side of the pool, screaming and cheering on their respective swimmers.
“Some very fast times were the result which was pleasantly surprising as they would have been on the limits of exhaustion.
“Too many swimmers achieved qualifying times for national events to mention.
“Once again swimming was the winner as there were a lot of very tired, but smiling faces at the conclusion of the meet.”
