Gisborne speedway racer Ethan Rees was named Superstock Competitor of the Year at the New Zealand Speedway awards presentation in Christchurch at the weekend.

The 25-year-old had 3NZ on his car by the end of the season. Before that it was 127G, a number well known to Gisborne speedway fans.

“It was a bit of shock, considering I was up against my brother Asher (1NZ) for the award,” Ethan said.

Ethan won the World 240 superstock championship in Rotorua in late January, a victory that would have helped his cause considerably when the national award was being judged.

He was also a standout driver for the Gisborne Giants superstock team during the two major teams competitions last season.

“It was pretty overwhelming to win the award,” he said.

“It’s good to see that all my hard work and all the support I have received from family and other supporters have paid off.”

Ethan’s brother Asher and father Peter are both past winners of the Superstock Competitor of the Year award.

Ethan was last month named the Club Competitor of the Year by Gisborne Speedway Club.

Club president Clyde McGrory said it was a huge honour for the club to have Ethan as a Gisborne representative.

“His achievement in being named the top superstock competitor in the country last season was so richly deserved,” he said.

“The club is very proud of him. He and his whole family are such great ambassadors for our club and for the sport.”
