The fields were still heavy but at least the sun came out to play in sporting events around the district.

Gisborne Boys' High first 15 produced a gutsy performance before going down 25-7 to world champions Hamilton Boys' High in a Super 8 rugby game; YMP A and Gisborne Girls' High 1st XI turned on an entertaining eight-goal Poverty Bay Prem 1 women's hockey clash; while Gisborne Boys' High first XI never stopped running in tough opening games at the Super 8 football tournament.

All Black Tyrel Lomax proved popular among Kaiti School kids at the official presentation of a wooden bench at C Company Memorial House on Sunday - part of a nationwide initiative recognising the importance of those "on the bench" for the ABs, including their supporters.
