Gisborne Girls’ High School First XI went  close to pulling off the upset of the season in Poverty Bay women’s club hockey when they met YMP A in a catch-up game on Tuesday night.

Defending champions YMP won 2-1 on the turf at Harry Barker Reserve. Moelani Tureia-Siataga and Kayla Leeper scored YMP’s goals and Brooke Brown netted for the students. Poverty Bay hockey operations manager Louise Teneti said the margin was unexpected.

“YMP A were at full strength for it so credit to the students for keeping it so close.” Girls’ High player Riley Ingoe (left) and Paikea’s Bronwyn O’Reilly are pictured in Prem 1 action last weekend. Paikea won 1-0. For Paikea and Lytton Old Boys’ two teams, the weekend round was named the “Ladies And Lads In Our Lives”. LOB wore pink shirts and Paikea blue shirts in a celebration of those who support them in their hockey and recognition of mental health awareness. Hockey stalwart Tony Scragg put together a video on Ladies And Lads In Our Lives. It can be viewed at tinyurl.com/4v6mn789 or through the Poverty Bay Hockey Turf Facebook page.
