“Tyla was all class, showcasing an excellent range of skills both inside and outside the ring,” club coach Kim-Maree Larby said.
She said Jett Larby boxed beautifully in all three rounds of his fight in the male novice cadet 46kg division and won unanimously.
“He has been boxing and training like this all year, showing a lot of skill and promise in this division.”
Dann Larby lost on a split decision against a strong opponent in the male novice cadet 50kg division.
Kim-Maree Larby said it was one of his best bouts to date.
She said Khadyn Kahukiwa-Kora started a little slow in his fight in the male novice cadet 40kg division but came home strong in the second and third rounds and won on a unanimous decision.
Maria Jeffery entered the ring for the first time as an amateur boxer.
The first adult fighter to represent the Patu Tahi Boxing Club, Jeffery lost against a sound opponent in the women’s 75kg division.
“Maria is already back in the gym working hard and can’t wait to get back in the ring again,” Larby said.
The main focus for the team now is training for the New Zealand championships at Hastings in October.
That will be a challenge, because the young fighters will move from novice to open divisions.
The club is supported financially by Gisborne Development Inc, lottery grants, the Community Organisation Grants Scheme and koha from whanau and friends.
