HOCKEY

GMC Green and Girls’ High School got the weekend hockey matches under way in fine style last night when they battled out a close one at Harry Barker Reserve.

The Green Machine came through 2-1 winners in a game that could have gone either way.

“It was one-all going into the third quarter,” said hockey commentator Tony Scragg.

It was poised to be anyone’s game into that last period, but midway through the quarter GMC sneaked in a goal to give them the points.

“It was a really good effort from the students, and will give them additional confidence heading into their double-header this weekend.”

On Sunday they play a catch-up game against YMP on the Hain Farming Turf.

Tonight’s hockey from 6pm will see YMP in action against Ngatapa in the women’s top four, and Ngatapa have a tough job on their hands.

“YMP should keep marching on to keep themselves at the top of the table in women’s A grade,” Scragg said.

“Ngatapa’s defences will really need to be on song to keep the scoreboard respectable.”

In the other game tonight from 7.30pm Gisborne Boys’ High School take on YMP A and the students will no doubt face a backlash after YMP’s second loss to the Fruits last weekend.

“Boys’ High could not ask for a better test than to come up against a YMP A side that’s hurting.

“They head off on Sunday to their Super 8 tournament in Rotorua, and tonight’s game will prepare them well for it,” Scragg said.

The Saturday programme begins with Waituhi and Te Aowera in the women’s B Grade.

“Waituhi have shown great form and they should pick up another victory to keep them in touch with Paikea.”

GMC Kowhai and Paikea follow from 2.30pm tomorrow, and with their tails up in the women’s B grade Paikea will be a handful.

“Even though Paikea would be red hot favourites, Kowhai have shown in the past few weeks they know how to score goals, and it might be just the test the Paikea defence will be looking for,” Scragg said.

In the last game for the weekend at 3.30pm tomorrow the Waituhi men take on YMP B.

“Waituhi will want to stamp their authority in the bottom three men’s competition.

“Unfortunately I suspect that YMP B could be on the receiving end.”
