THE weather gods smiled on Gisborne as Round 1 of the Gisborne Motorcycle Sports Club beach racing series roared into action last Saturday.

A low spring tide made some interesting formations in the sand and made riders work hard to keep their wheels on the ground.

In the senior 0-open class, Daniel Fogarty (YamahaYZF450) showed he had not slowed down during the off season.

Graham Wedlake was back on a new machine, a Honda CRF450, and although he was still sorting the gearing out for the 800-metre straights, Wedlake was happy with his machine.

Peter Krinkle and Nick Wilkie, both on Honda CR500s, were battling it out all day.

In the senior 0-500cc class, Graham Wedlake (Honda CRF450) probably felt the others were ganging up on him . . . his bike was the only four-stroke in this class. Wedlake looked to be making it a clean sweep until he stalled on the first corner in Race 3. Peter Krinkle didn’t need any prompting take the No.1 spot. Wedlake gave it a good go but finished 0.2 seconds behind Krinkle.

Race 1: Wedlake 1, Krinkle 2, Nick Wilkie (Honda CR500) 3. Race 2: Wedlake 1, Krinkle 2, Wilkie 3. Race 3: Krinkle 1, Wedlake 2, Wilkie 3.

The senior 0-250cc class had the usual hot action you would expect in this class. Bryce Norman (Suzuki RM250) took three well-deserved wins. Johnathon Wilkie (Kawasaki KX250) threw everything he had at Norman but had to settle for second best.

Race 1: Norman 1, Wilkie 2, Phil Scott (Kawasaki KX125) 3. Race 2: Norman 1, Wilkie 2, Scott 3. Race 3: Norman 1, Wilkie 2, Scott 3.

The ATV (Quad) class is always a crowd-pleaser. Ian Newman (GSX750-powered Honda TRX) was champion of the day. He has that ATV flying. The real battle was between Graham Wedlake and Alana Andrews, both on Suzuki LTR450s. Wedlake had 30 years of racing experience over Andrews but Andrews evened things up by being 40 kilograms lighter. It was neck-and-neck racing all day. Phil Scott jumped on a Honda TRX550 to see if he would like ATV racing and he loved it.

Race 1: Newman 1, Wedlake 2, Andrews 3. Race 2: Newman 1, Andrews 2, Wedlake 3. Race 3: Newman 1, Wedlake 2, Andrews 3.

The women’s combined 0-500 class was a hard-fought class. Alana Andrews and her Suzuki LTR450 ATV had a great battle against Gabrielle Phillips-Irvine and her two-wheeled Kawasaki KX85. Fritha Rau (Kawasaki KX85) and Anna Hyland (Suzuki DRZ125) had a good tussle for third.

Race 1: Andrews 1, Phillips-Irvine 2, Rau 3. Race 2: Andrews 1, Phillips-Irvine 2, Rau 3. Race 3: Andrews 1, Phillips-Irvine 2, Rau 3.

The young racers in the Junior A (125cc) class are so fast the seniors are hoping they never move up into their class. Troy Andrews was over the moon with the performance of his new Yamaha YZ125. Battler Murdock Rau didn’t let the fact he was on a small Kawasaki KX85 slow him down. Jynuka Peach (KTM125) was in this class for the first time and will be a rider to watch in the future.

Race 1: Andrews 1, Rau 2, Ben Logan (Honda CR125) 3. Race 2: Andrews 1, Rau 2, Logan 3. Race 3: Andrews 1, Rau 2, Logan 3.

In the Junior B (85cc) class, another epic battle took place between Sophie Peach (KTM85) and Gabrielle Phillips-Irvine (Kawasaki KX85). It was the first time on the beach in this class for Jack Leef, another rider to watch out for, on his Kawasaki KX85.

Race 1: Peach 1, Phillips-Irvine 2, Leef 3. Race 2: Phillips-Irvine 1, Peach 2, Leef 3. Race 3: Phillips-Irvine 1, Peach 2, Leef 3.

The Mini 65 class was down on numbers but still had some great racing.

Race 1: Luka Fogarty (KTM65) 1, Emily Swann (Kawasaki KX65) 2. Race 2: Fogarty 1, Swann 2. Race 3: Fogarty 1, Swann 2.

In the Mini 50 class, for the club’s youngest racers, Lachlan Phillips-Crane (KTM50) was the fastest on the day. The awards for having the biggest smiles and having a lot of fun went to Lucas Scott-Haenga (Suzuki DRZ) and Jaxon Pardoe (Yamaha PW50). Despite numerous falls, both riders always got back on.

Race 1: Phillips-Crane 1, Scott-Haenga 2, Pardoe 3. Race 2: Phillips-Crane 1, Scott-Haenga 2, Pardoe 3. Race 3: Phillips-Crane 1, Scott-Haenga 2, Pardoe 3.

The next beach racing meeting is on June 18.
