Late ride knocks out Christie

Gisborne-Mahia surfer Ricardo Christie suffered a pipped-at-the-post elimination from the latest World Surf League Qualifying Series 10,000 contest.

Christie was on track to advance from his round 3 heat the Hawaiian Pro only for Brazilian Luel Felipe to deny him with a late wave.

Felipe’s 4.30 ride promoted him to second and pushed Christie back to third. The top two advanced to round 4.

The heat was won by South African Matthew McGillivray with a score of 14.07 (6.67, 7.40) for his two best waves. Felipe was second on 11.47 (7.17, 4.30), Christie third on 10.97 (5.50, 5.47) and American Conner Coffin fourth on 10.73 (4.50, 6.23).

Equestrian correction

The date of the next showjumping and show hunter sports day at Gisborne’s Showgrounds Park was incorrectly given as December 1 in The Gisborne Herald yesterday. In fact, it will be held this Sunday, November 24. Spectator entry is free.
