Sports venues around the region are empty over the weekend following multiple cancellations due to the  state of emergency announced yesterday.

Hockey  (posted on Poverty Bay Hockey Turf Facebook page)

“All hockey is cancelled this weekend. There will be no senior grade hockey played Friday or Saturday and this will include any Sunday trainings.  The safety of our members and wider community is paramount.

“And whilst we might be OK in town we have many that travel from our rural communities and they could be cut off if this weather continues.

“We will work towards having these games played during our weeknights and holiday period. In the meantime, look after yourselves, stay safe, hopefully dry and warm.”

“Intermediate and secondary grade - cancelled. All current match-ups and semis will now be played Saturday, July 1. The final games will be pushed out to Saturday, July 22 (after school holidays).

“Senior netball and Premier games in the YMCA Saturday - cancelled. All games will be rescheduled and communicated to teams as soon as possible.

“For A Reserve to 2nd Grade, this will mean a double-up weekend at some stage to catch up games. Premier may need an extra night booked, or changes to the Round 3 draw just sent out.

“We will update as soon as we can. Despite premier playing indoors it is the safety of access for players and officials that have led to this decision.”

Rugby (Ngati Porou East Coast RU Facebook page)

“Due to Te Tairāwhiti moving in to a state of emergency as weather conditions worsen up and down the Coast, a decision to postpone all club rugby games scheduled for this Saturday 24th has been made.

“Club rugby has been pushed out by one week, so all games that were scheduled this weekend will be played next Saturday, July 1, and so on.

“The u14 boys and u18 girls musters that are scheduled to run this Sunday have also been postponed. New dates will be set and announced once finalised.”

Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union confirmed yesterday that all senior and JAB rugby was cancelled.

A decision is to be made on Monday regarding what is to happen in the Premier and Senior 1 club competitions due to today’s cancellation.
