SEVERAL district sports venues became cauldrons of battle on Saturday as major winter codes kicked off.

Victoria Domain was a hub of activity of primary, secondary and senior grade netball from morning to afternoon.

Likewise at various local football grounds where Gisborne Thistle and Gisborne United got their Central Federation and Pacific Premiership campaigns under way with home clashes and Eastern League men's soccer started.

Waikohu Sports Club hosted Poverty Bay premier club rugby's Tiny White Opening Day at which YMP and OBM enjoyed victories.
