“Jill also has been president.”
The couple said it was satisfying to see and encourage young athletes progressing through the grades.
“So many sportspeople in Gisborne have started at athletics and progressed on to other sports and competed at national and international level,” said Jill, who was also involved in netball, in coaching and management roles.
“It’s rewarding and satisfying to be able to give back to the athletic club after we received so much from it in the way of fun, friendship and sportsmanship.
“Not every athlete can be a winner but we can achieve personal bests and, most importantly, take part and enjoy participation and friendship.
“We are humbled by these certificates and will continue to support the Gisborne Athletic Club.”
Geoff said it was a great club and, small as it might be, it produced great athletes in whatever sport they eventually followed.
“We are now officials at the club and we get the same amount of enjoyment undertaking this role,” said Geoff, who has competed in lawn bowls at national level and in motor sport, and managed a senior rugby team for several years.
“The club needs more volunteers, and training can be provided.
“Sport — no matter what — develops your character and overall approach to life in a meaningful way.”
Former club secretary Belinda Irving said the Symthes had “a true passion for the sport to stay involved while there is no family involved”.
“Our family have been involved in Gisborne athletics for five seasons and I have never attended a local athletics night where the Smythes haven’t been there helping with the field events.”
“They don’t have any grandchildren in Gisborne Athletic Club but every Wednesday night you’ll see Jill, with tape in hand, measuring or guiding some new talent.
“Geoff works behind the scenes organising the timetable and helping with registrations and the like.”
