Day 2 of the Hunting & Fishing Gisborne Marlin & Tuna Hunt has been described as a “very slow” day’s fishing.
Up until mid-afternoon today, just eight yellowfin tuna had been landed among the 71 boats on the water.
“A good day for fishing weather-wise, but a bit slowwhen it comes to the number of game fish caught,” Gisborne Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club reported.
A yellowfin tuna caught on Thursday by Ollie Cave on the boat Pier Pressure weighed in at 22.715 kilograms and was leading the $10,000 heaviest tuna section.
Meanwhile, Gisborne Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club has been running a raffle to support the family of Hawke’s Bay boy Riley Burch, who has been diagnosed with bone cancer.
Riley was described on the club’s Facebook page as a “keen sportsman and fisherman”, who had planned to be in the marlin and tuna [hunt] fishing off the boat Wahoo “until he got chucked this curve ball”.
“We are more than halfway to our target of 200 tickets sold at $10 each,” a club spokeswoman said. “They have been selling like hot cakes.”
The weights for the yellowfin caught today were not available when the Herald went to print.
