HOCKEY

THE Green Machine sent a shock wave through Gisborne hockey circles on Saturday.

It was not that they beat defending women’s champions YMP for the second time this season; it was that they beat them 7-1.

GMC Green won the first game against YMP by one goal.

The six scorers on the GMC team sheet on Saturday illustrated how wide-ranging the attack had been.

The scoreline astounded hockey commentator Tony Scragg.

“It was 3-0 at halftime but YMP were still in the match at that stage,” he said.

“But GMC kept the pressure on when they could have gone into a defensive mode. They just kept attacking in the second half.

“It was really good to watch and was the best team game I have seen from the Green Machine for some time.”

Scragg said he felt the inexperience of some YMP players might have cost them.

“But I am sure GMC will be mindful of the fact that it’s what happens on finals day that really matters.”

Amber Dental Gisborne Girls’ High School drew 1-1 with JNL Paikea.

“It was a good result for both sides,” Scragg said.

“It really mixes up the bottom three sides in the premiers.”

GMC Gold had a good 2-1 victory over YMP B in the women’s B grade.

“That was a bit of a shock result,” Scragg said.

“I thought YMP would have had it, and it certainly stirred up the bottom-four women’s competition.”

GMC Kowhai were too classy for Roseland Tavern Te Aowera, winning 9-0.

“Kowhai are rightful leaders of the B grade for women,” Scragg said.

In the men’s matches, Lytton Old Boys Masters conceded 17 goals against THC, but they scored five of their own, which they were pretty happy about.

“It was probably one of the more unusual scores we’ll ever see on the turf,” Scragg said.

“Credit to THC for scoring so many goals, and for their attacking form.

“But it also shows the old dogs don’t lie down.”

LOB NZ Fruits managed a 2-2 draw with Gisborne Boys’ High School as the Fruits’ result stocks continue to improve,

“They are turning their season around and well done to them,” Scragg said.

“For Boys’ High, the coming school holidays could be a factor in player availability.”

The YMP A men’s side had eight names on the scoring sheet when they demolished their B team 18-3.

“YMP A are all attacking class,” Scragg said.

“I am sure, though, that their B team cherished the three goals they scored.”
