The Yelverton Shield and Peck Shield Gisborne East Coast centre junior interclub events were held at Poverty Bay Bowling Club last Sunday.
Restricted to bowlers with eight years or less playing experience, only Poverty Bay and Gisborne were able to field seven-women teams in the Peck Shield while Kahutia joined Poverty Bay and Gisborne sides in the men’s Yelverton Shield fixture.
In the Peck Shield, the Poverty Bay women got home on differential — plus-19 to Gisborne’s minus-19 — after each team scored 13 game points from the three rounds..
Poverty Bay singles player Ngawai Turipa showed her experience on her home green with two wins. She beat Gisborne’s Angela Gibson-Sam 23-20 and Diane Oates 25-5.
However, in the third round, Oates gained her revenge over Turipa with a 16-13 victory.

Poverty Bay pair Kathryn Flaugere (skip) and first-year player Diane Doyle won their first game 17-10 but lost their second 22-10.
In a tactical move, Poverty Bay selector Jan Powell promoted Robyn Arthur to skip the pair with Doyle in the last game and they won convincingly, 25-10.
In the fours, Gisborne won their first two games —13-4 and 12-10 — but a rearranged Poverty Bay team of Kym Walters, Flaugere (at three) Joan Gledhill and Trish Leach scored a crucial 11-all draw in the third round. It gave them the same game points as Gisborne but Poverty Bay clinched the Peck Shield because of their superior differential.
The Kahutia men’s team, thanks to a last-end win against Gisborne in the fours, claimed the Yelverton Shield with 12 points (plus-11 differential) from defending champions Gisborne on 10 (plus-14) and Poverty Bay on four (minus-25).
In the singles, Gisborne’s Mike Donnelly played well in wins over Kahutia’s Marty Ryan 21-13 and Poverty Bay’s Dawson Owen 20-13.
Kahutia’s experienced pair of Willy Murray (skip) and Ray Young had two wins, defeating Poverty Bay 15-12 and Gisborne 23-8.
Their fours team of Joe Wimutu (skip), Alan Parker, Frank McLoughlin and Graeme Atkins pipped Poverty Bay 10-9 and Gisborne 10-8 in that vital last round.
