GISBORNE-born five-goal polo international Glenn Sherriff is in the Semco PDL team taking part in the Land Rover New Zealand Polo Open in Clevedon on February 18.

The New Zealand Open started as a grassroots polo tournament in 1977. Now in its 41st year it is among the mostly highly regarded polo tournaments on the global polo calendar.

A photo of Sherriff features on the front of the New Zealand Open magazine.

The Semco team were runners-up last year, and this year have a “stellar line-up”, according to the magazine.

Sherriff will bring his “trademark no-nonsense powerhouse approach”, playing beside fellow Kiwi international Thomas Hunt (six goals), 18-year-old Argentina international Juan Martin Zubia (seven goals) and team patron Harry Semenoff Jnr (zero goals).

New Zealand Polo Open executive director Hannah Marshall said players from Australia, England, South Africa, Argentina and Chile are flying in to take part in the tournament.

“The New Zealand Open is as competitive as the best polo tournaments in the world,” she said.

Six teams on top polo ponies, moving at high speed on a field equivalent to four rugby pitches will make for an exhilarating polo experience, she said.
