Gisborne swimmer Taylor Newman won a silver medal on Day 1 of the New Zealand Age Group Swimming Nationals being held in Hastings at the new 10-lane, $32.5 million Hawke’s Bay Regional Aquatic Centre.

She is one of three Enterprise Swim Team girls attending their first nationals.

“Taylor, aged 13, won the silver medal in the 50-metre backstroke final, which was an awesome result as she was ranked seventh in her age group in the country going into the meet,” coach Matt Martin said.

“Fifteen-year-old Holli MacDonald swam in the 400m freestyle, where she finished sixth in the final.

“Rio Sasamoto swam the 14-year 200m individual medley, finishing fourth in the final and missing a medal by just 0.2 of a second.”
