NETBALL

NETBALL fans can settle in for a feast of exciting action at the YMCA tomorrow morning when the school teams go head to head again, and second and third on the table fight for vital points.

The 9am game in the Pak’nSave premier competition has “classic” written all over it — Gisborne Girls’ High School Senior A and Ritana Senior A face off for the third time this season.

The school sides have won a game each in the previous encounters.

“The clash of the schools is always exciting,” netball commentator Sherrill Beale said.

“Both teams have shown improvement and have been playing some good netball.

“I am expecting a close, competitive game.”

Ritana from Lytton High School may have a slight edge in performance going into the game, based on their showing over the past month.

They fell heavily to YMP Sunshine Brewery but have beaten Whangara Old Girls (54-46) and Claydens Waikohu (51-42).

They also pushed Taste One High School Girls all the way in their recent 55-50 loss.

Girls’ High have lost to Horouta Gold in the past month, but then they pushed Waikohu in a thriller, losing by just three goals.

They lost to HSOG 62-50, and were thumped by YMP 72-33.

The consistency Ritana have shown in their results probably earns them the tag of favourites.

In the second premier match at the YMCA tomorrow, at 11am, HSOG come up against Whangara Old Girls.

The outcome is important for both teams as they vie for the best possible positioning in the top four.

HSOG sit second on the table with 29 points, and Whangara are in third place on 24.

“These two teams always have a competitive game as they know each other’s play so well,” Beale said.

“They both like to move the ball at speed, so spectators will enjoy the netball skills on display.”

They have had a win apiece in their two previous outings this season.

“I am expecting another close game for the full hour,” Beale said.

Senior netball returns to Victoria Domain tomorrow, from 9am to 1.30pm.
