Wilson won his game in the playoff for fifth.
Meanwhile, the Barry club's Per Elzen in Division 2, for players of handicaps 4 and above, played out of his skin. He won eight games and headed Tom Cooke from the Heretaunga Club, on seven wins.
However, in the final Cooke found another gear and beat Elzen 7-4, which left Elzen runner-up.
In the limited singles for players with a handicap of 8 and above, Ina Elzen played well in a very competitive round robin of 12 players. She finished with a creditable seven wins and, although she was out of the prize money, she was delighted to have done enough to lower her handicap.
The local pair of Hayes and Wilson teamed up for their section of the open doubles. They played some hard long games and finished section play tied with a pair from the Rose Gardens club. However, they were placed second on countback. This put them into a playoff for third and fourth with the runners-up from the other section — a game they easily won 7-3.
The Elzens struggled a little in their section of Division 2 doubles round robin, finishing with just one win. They were determined to do better in the playoff for positions fifth to eighth and, with all guns blazing, they won all three of their games relatively easily to finish in a well-deserved fifth place.
