Rising talent was on display at the Poverty Bay primary schools Rippa Rugby tournament held at Waikirikiri Park. The competition featured a Year 5 and 6 boys' grade and, for the first time, a Y4, 5 and 6 girls-only grade. A couple of mixed teams competed in the boys' grade.
Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union development officer Mitchell Purvis said it was “an awesome day” where participation and having fun were the main factors. He made special mention of the number of girls who took part — over 150. It was great to see so many girls giving it a go and he was impressed by their skill level, enthusiasm and willingness to learn, he said. Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Uri a Māui beat Awapuni 8-7 in extra time in the boys' final. Horouta Wananga pipped Wainui Beach School by one point in the girls' final.
