SEVEN Gisborne footballers didn’t let a chilling wind and a few drops of rain deter them this week as they prepared for a national age-group tournament.

They have been selected to represent Central Football, one of seven federations administering the game in New Zealand.

Attacking midfielder Grace Levy, striker Tayla Broughton and leftback Dara Mulrooney are in the under-14 girls’ squad, defensive utility players Rubi Perano and Lily Auckram are in the u16 girls’ squad, and midfielder Oli Davies and striker Jimmy Somerton are in the u15 boys’ squad.

Gisborne women’s football development officer Lizzie Hall is co-coach of the Central girls’ u16 squad.

Central Football covers the middle of the North Island — Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Gisborne, Whanganui and Taranaki.

The other federations are Auckland, Northern, Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Capital, Mainland and Football South.

The Gisborne players in the federation squads attended a training camp in Palmerston North at the weekend.

On November 24 they will play teams representing Capital Football (Wellington) in Palmerston North; on December 1 they play Waikato/Bay of Plenty in Taupo; and from December 11 to 15 they will compete in the national age-group tournament in Wellington against other federation teams.
