GISBORNE’S Tayler Reid snatched silver by the narrowest of margins at the opening event of the International Triathlon Union world series in New Plymouth yesterday.
Reid beat Portugal’s Ricardo Batista in a sprint to the line for second as fellow Kiwi Hayden Wilde won the race.
Wilde completed the 750-metre swim in
Port Taranaki, 20-kilometre cycle and 5km run in 55 minutes 57 seconds.
Reid and Batista were given the same time of 56.32.
Reid’s partner, Nicole van der Kaay, won the women’s race in 1 hour 2mins 57secs, with another New Zealander, Ainsley Thorpe, second in 1:03.06.
Wilde’s win was the first by a New Zealander in the New Plymouth race since Bevan Docherty in 2009.
