A shortage of referees means only one game in men’s Eastern League Division 1 football will be controlled by an official tomorrow.

Referee’s appointment co-ordinator John Jones said it was an unusual situation caused by the fact that four senior referees were unavailable for varying reasons.

“There is basically a panel of only five senior referees available,” he said.

“By contrast we have been enjoying outstanding success with our junior referees’ programme, for which Mel Knight can take the credit.

“These young referees have been controlling games for Eastland junior football on Saturday mornings and taking appointments as assistant referees on men’s Division 1 games. Some have also been controlling games in the women’s division. The feedback from these, as they have continued to develop, has been generally positive.

“Unfortunately the senior situation is not so good. We raised this with club representatives at a co-operative and amicable meeting with club officials this month. Essentially we need more players to take up refereeing or what is happening this Saturday will become more frequent.”
