Mareikura-Hiro, a new intermediate boys’ team coached by waka ama pioneer Matahi Brightwell, won two gold medals and a silver at the Waka Ama New Zealand national sprint championships at Lake Karapiro last month.
And one of the crew, Jarrod Hill, won the individual intermediate 500m race, setting a record
in the process.
Coverage of the Horouta Waka Hoe Club achievements will appear tomorrow. All 30 national sprint regattas have had paddlers from Mareikura attending, and as a group the Mareikura paddlers have never left without a medal.
