SURFING

GISBORNE surfer Maz Quinn showed he is still a force to be reckoned with in New Zealand competition when he won the Barrett Homes Surf Open at Papamoa Beach, Tauranga, yesterday.

It was the second of seven events on the New Zealand Surf Series and NZ Longboard Tour.

The country’s top surfers had to compete on waves under the one-metre mark, but light, variable sea breezes made conditions good enough for finalists to produce some explosive surfing.

Quinn, a four-time men’s open winner at the national surfing championships, looked comfortable for the entire 30-minute final, picking off only the best waves to post a 14.5-point heat total.

He said they weren’t ideal conditions, but he had been trying to be patient for the whole contest.

The surfers had been lucky to have head-high waves for the final day of the event.

“The conditions were tough and I sat down there south of the others,” Quinn said.

“Even with the priority system, I could have sat on my opponents, but it went flat for 10 minutes towards the end of the heat, which helped me out.”

Quinn, 42, competes only in selected events and, despite the win this weekend, is not sure about competing at the Rip Curl Pro at Raglan, the third event on the New Zealand Surf Series this year.

He said he would wait until he could assess the conditions before deciding whether he would enter.

Quinn held off runner-up Levi Stewart (Waihi Beach) and Buck Woods (formely of Gisborne and now of Mount Maunganui), who both had seven-point rides in the final but were unable to find good second waves to challenge Quinn. Woods took third place, ahead of Alex Dive (Mnt) in fourth.

By way of his second placing, Stewart jumps to second on the national rankings behind new leader Taylor Hutchison (Raglan), who was seventh yesterday.

Ella Williams’s win in the final of the women’s division came off an 11.5-point heat total that was enough to see off challenges from local surfer Raiha Ensor and national champion Aimee Brown (Great Barrier Island), who was unable to extend her run of three consecutive wins.

Williams is off to her first World Qualifying Series event of the year next week and will be in Australia for four events over the next six weeks.

Runner-up Raiha Ensor, who joins Williams in Australia next week, was one good wave away from the win but conditions worked against her.

Aimee Brown finished the final in third place and while she could not make it four in a row, another podium finish means she keeps the top position on the national rankings.

Taranaki took out both titles in the longboard divisions with South African import Michael Grendon surfing to a 14.0-point heat total in the men’s final and Jo Moore surfing to a 9.0-point heat total in the women’s final.

Last year’s women’s national longboard champion, Sasha Brownlie, was third in the final yesterday.

Brownlie, now of Auckland, is the daughter of Nick Brownlie, of Ruakituri, and Vicky Hewetson, of Gisborne.
