“A lot of people are talking about us.”

So said Poverty Bay-East Coast captain Anaru Reedy after his team made another strong impression on Day 2 of the Freyberg Masters interprovincial.

PBEC ended the day frustrated but quietly confident of racking up an elusive team victory following two narrow defeats on the Motueka course.

They had good chances to win both before falling 3-2 to Waikato and 3½-1½ to hosts Tasman.

Waikato are sitting second on the points standings while Tasman are third.

That PBEC got themselves into winning positions underlines the compeititveness of the bottom-seeded province, but Reedy and his team-mates know they let at least one of these clashes slip, and are hungry to get across the line.

“It's just those crucial moments where we let ourselves down a bit,” Reedy said.

“We had our chances but made some bad decisions, which kicked us in the backside.”

That said, Reedy was proud of both performances against high-quality opponents.

PBEC No.3 Tony Akroyd led the efforts with victories in both of his matches.

“He did great,” Reedy said. “He's playing really well.”

Reedy, at No.1, had a win and No.4 David Solomann had a half.

PBEC went into yesterday morning's clash with Waikato on the back of halving with Auckland on Monday afternoon.

Halfway through the Waikato tie, nothing separated the sides.

An in-form Reedy had a win in the bag at 6-up after nine holes against Gavin Cortesi and went on to triumph 6 and 4.

Akroyd was in control of his match with Andrew Morgan and the pair shook hands on the 16th.

No.5 Jace Brown, who replaced a sick Pete Bremner, lost 2 and 1 to Jordan Rangihika — a player many King of the Coast Open regulars at Tolaga Bay will know.

PBEC were on the wrong side of 18th-hole battles in the other two matches.

Reedy said Solomann, 1-down to Matt Stachurski playing the short par-4 last (the ninth as they started on 10), felt he was going to need birdie, so took driver off the tee only to lose his ball.

His opponent drove out of bounds and the pair ended up halving the hole with double-bogey sixes.

“It was just one of those things,” Reedy said of “Solly's” misfortune.

PBEC No.2 Dwayne Russell was all-square with Andrew McGivern but three-putted the 18th for a 1-down loss.

“He had a downhill putt (for birdie) but showed it too much respect and left it 5-6-feet short,” Reedy said.

PBEC were 2-up in three of their matches at the halfway stage of their Tasman tie.

With four holes to go, there was little in it.

Akroyd secured a 2 and 1 win over David Leonard while Reedy was beaten 2 and 1 by Corey Taylor, and Russell lost 2 and 1 to Blair Bavin.

Solomann halved with Nathan Moore and Brown, after being square with Mark Le Compte throughout their battle, lost the last hole and the match.

Brown was naturally disappointed but Reedy said he played solid over the day and shouldn't be too hard on himself.

Despite their struggles at the business end, Reedy said the team were looking positively to the rest of the week and were “amping to go” in their only match today.

“We're nursing a few wounds today. We know we could have won both of those matches but let it slip. We're looking to turn the tide.”

PBEC, sitting 13th on the table with half a team point and 7½ individual wins. faced eighth-placed Northland this morning.

Canterbury are top of the table on 3½ team points (14½ individual wins), with Tasman second on 3 (12½) and Waikato third on 3 (12).
