High School Old Girls face a monumental challenge in their premier grade netball clash with table-toppers YMP1 in the Gisborne YMCA tomorrow morning.

The defending champions currently sit in sixth position out of six teams in the premier grade, with time and games running out to decide the top four for the playoffs.

YMP 1 have beaten F45 High School Old Girls convincingly in their two previous round-robin encounters this season.

YMP are looking strong contenders for the championship title and have done so by all players working together on attack and defence.

High School Old Girls have given glimpses of good team work recently and last week they had a close contest with second-placed Claydens Waikohu 1.

Only two goals separated the two teams going into the last quarter, with the score only slipping away to a seven goal loss for HSOG in the last five minutes.

HSOG player-coach Alex Sinclair says her team are well aware of how tough it will be for them tomorrow when they take the YMCA court against YMP1 at 9am.

“It's going to be a hard one. We've got heaps of players out with injury, and most of the team will have to play full games.”

Sinclair said it was not the greatest feeling to be sitting at the bottom of the table after winning the premiership last year.

“Especially with only tomorrow's game and one more, time is running out for us to make the top four.”

Their final game is against Horouta Gold.

“Our aim will be to try to stop YMP's connections with their shooters, but that's not going to be easy,” she said.

“We will need to really work as team to compete with them.”

YMP coach Ingrid Brown said little by little her team were looking to polish up on aspects of their play.

“Playing High School Old Girls, we can utilise this game to do that.

“I am happy with how we are tracking.

“But ahead of the playoffs we will be looking further at how best to use our impact players from the bench,” Brown said.

“We want to keep striving.

“There is always room for improvement and no room for complacency.”

High School Old Girls will need to bring their top game for the full hour if they want to stop YMP's run tomorrow.
