The old adage a fast game’s a good game was applicable for one team but not another in Poverty Bay Premier club cricket’s Doleman Cup on Saturday.

Moshim’s Spice Horouta Te Waka needed just seven overs to chase down Coastal Concrete OBR’s 36 all out in 15 overs on Harry Barker Reserve’s rep wicket.

The other Doleman Cup game between Bollywood High School Old Boys and Gisborne Boys’ High First XI at the Rectory also ended early when the match was abandoned at the innings break because of rain.

It was a top-of-the-table clash so both teams picked up points to be on 10 apiece, with Horouta on eight and OBR four.

Horouta skipper Jagroop Singh chose to bowl and led his pace attack superbly.

He took two wickets for 10 runs off three overs while new-ball partner Gurishwar Singh got 3-15 off six, including the prized scalp of the dangerous Martin Worndl, bowled for a nine-ball duck.

First-change seamer Billy Morse finished the carnage with 4-10 off five, including two maidens, and Arun Babu picked up 1-1 off one.

Left-handed opening batter Hansa Fernando (20 off 18, with three boundaries) set about knocking off the 37 runs for victory while surviving the pace and fire of OBR spearhead Bekko Page.

Page (2-16 off three overs) was penetrative but Te Waka quickly wrapped up the run chase with seven wickets in hand.

“It was maybe our best performance so far this season on a wicket that was helpful to the bowlers,” skipper Singh said. “They stuck to good line and length and let the ball to do rest.

“We’re especially proud of Gurishwar, who travelled from Ōpōtiki to play for us, and opening batsman Teghbir Singh, who made the trip back here from Tūrangi.”

OBR captain Matt Cook said the new pitch on the rep block had a greenish tinge and cracks, so it was a good toss to win and Horouta held their catches.

“We had them three wickets down at the end of the game, so we didn’t go down without a fight.”

High School Old Boys captain Taye McGuinness chose to bat on a tricky wicket and his side made 154 all out on the back of two good knocks.

McGuinness hit a six and four consecutive boundaries in his 30-ball 33 at first drop.

He came in after opening bowler Brandon Fearnley cleaned out Alex Shanks (5) with an in-swinging yorker with the first ball of the fourth over and 13 runs on the board.

Just as High School Old Boys looked in danger of being rolled cheaply at 60-5, sixth man in Anthony Boyder entered and threw chance to the wind.

The powerhouse Boyder belted six sixes – a few of those into neighbouring properties – and four fours in a whirlwind 65 off 33 balls before left-arm spearhead Johnathan Gray bowled him with the score at 143.

Gray, after taking some stick from Boyder in one over, came back strongly for 3-28 in 7.4 overs.

Captain and left-arm orthodox spinner Whitfield, also in Boyder’s firing line, picked up 3-41 off four overs and Fearnley ended with an impressive 2-13 off five.

It was the first game of cricket to be held at the Rectory ground for close to 20 years.
