Poverty Bay lose to Northland in 50-over opener

Poverty Bay took six wickets off a strong Northland in the first round of 50-over games at the Northern Districts senior secondary schoolboys’ tournament here yesterday.

The Graham Hudson-coached Bay made 150 and Northland replied with 152-6 in 28.overs.

For Poverty Bay, Robert Schwass made 38 and captain Paul Stewart 28 — the only two Bay batsmen to bat for 30 balls.

Left-arm spinner Kian Bird, opening bowler Nathan Parkes and fellow seamer Cam Gordon were Northland’s chief wicket-takers.

Jacob Colbert, bowling first-change for Poverty Bay, took 2-25 off seven overs. His line and length were excellent.

All-rounder Travis Mitchell (2-28 off five) was also steady.

Sam Webb topscored for Northland with 52 while opener Alex Poore made 29.
