KAYAKING

Poverty Bay Kayak Club emerged from three days of competition as top junior club overall at the national canoe sprint championships last weekend.

The club had 22 paddlers competing, and they all returned with at least one medal.

Coach Liz Thompson said it was hard to pick highlights among so many outstanding performances.

Victory in the open men's K1 1000 metres was a great result for Zach Ferkins, she said.

“It was awesome to win both mixed K2 200m races — Sam Ferkins and Alex Bermingham in the open and Angus Baker and Genna Robertson in the under-16s,” Thompson said.

“It was the first time they have been raced at the nationals.”

First-year under-18 competitors Emma Brownlie (silver in the K1 500m) and Seren Rogers (gold in the K1 5km) combined for bronze in u18 K2 500m.

First-year u16 paddler Angus Baker won the K1 5km and earned bronze in the K1 200m and 500m. He then combined with Jamie Walker for silver in both K2 distances.

Baker also paddled up a division, in the u18 K4 with Will Pittar and Arawa paddlers Alex Hickman and Thomas MacGibbon, to win the 200m and 500m finals.

Pittar combined with Archie Tonks (Karapiro) for silver in the u18 men's K2 200m.

U14 boys Ollie Egan (silver in the 500m and 5km, bronze in 200m) combined with nationals newcomer Matt McKendry to win gold in the K2 500m and silver in the 200.

“The club's sole u14 girls' representative, Amber Dearness, had great singles races,” Thompson said.

“She was second in the 200m and third in the 500m, but also paddled with other clubs for four silver medals in team boats.”

In the u16 women's division, Genna Robertson returned from a long injury layoff to win silver in both K1 sprints and gold with Arawa paddler Natasha MacGibbon in both K2 races.

In the open women, Kim Thompson and Britney Ford won the K2 200m, and Bermingham and Samalulu Clifton (North Shore) won the K2 500m.
