WaikohuLOCALS ruled as Waikohu officially opened its 2019 season on Saturday.

Home-course duo Uma Chambers and Cheryl Te Rito won the Canadian mixed foursomes with 40 points, two ahead of Te Puia Springs pair Peter Harrison and Georgina Roberts.

Waikohu member Tama Brown won the men’s stableford with 40 points, with Patutahi’s George Brown second on 38 and Gisborne Park’s Anuresh Chandra third on 34.

There is no club competition on Sunday.

Gisborne ParkRON Moiser went into the Tuesday veteran men’s stableford last week on a run of 43 consecutive rounds over 100 dating back to January 28, 2018.

He ended that run with 99-35-64, for 45 points, heading off Allan Nairne, who was also on fire, by one point.

Hector White had to go back even further than Moiser to find a round lower than his Sunday stableford-winning effort.

White shot 83-18-65, for 43 points, mixing 11 bogeys with seven pars.

Les Green won the men’s stableford on Sunday with a 42-point haul while Barbara Woods won the women’s competition with 40.

PatutahiWAS it a week too soon?

George Brown will answer that question on Sunday after what could turn out to be a prematurely hot round last weekend.

Brown had 16 pars and two bogeys in his 2-over 72-12-60, which not surprisingly won the men’s 0-16 division net on Sunday.

It’s now on him to repeat that effort on a bigger stage — the Patutahi open opening day tournament this Sunday.

The tournament, which tees off at 11am, features Canadian mixed foursomes and men’s sections.

Jandy Winiata was also in fine form on Sunday in winning the women’’s net —her 83-20-63 featuring three birdies.

Hukanui Brown was not on the prize list net-wise but did have three twos in his gross 71 — on the sixth, ninth and 15th holes.

Rios Moleta’s 83-19-64 won the men’s 17+ division.

Poverty BayTENE Goldsmith is so close to joining the age-breaking ranks, he can almost touch it.

“Goldie”, who turns 72 in a couple of weeks, fired a brilliant 1-over-par 73-8-65, for 43 points, which won him the division 1 men’s stableford on Sunday.

His round was highlighted by sinking a wedge for eagle-2 on the 324-metre par-4 eighth hole (his 17th as he started on the 10th) while his consistency saw him par 14 of the other 17 holes in nines of 36, 37.

Neil Mackie struck the jackpot of two twos last Thursday in spectacular fashion.

He made eagle-2 on the 303m seventh hole and birdie 2 on the 11th in his 77-10-67, for 41 points, which won him the division 1 men’s stableford.

Alan Destry followed up his stableford-winning 41 points on Thursday with 42 points on Saturday to complete a division 2 men’s double for the week.

Bruce Talbot’s handicap dropped two strokes after his 42-point effort the previous weekend. It didn’t faze him. He repeated the effort in winning the division 2 stableford on Sunday with 82-16-66, for 42.

Former Poverty Bay-East Coast representative Pete Hakiwai marked his return as a full member with a win on Saturday.

A playing partner described “Haks” as “a very handy 13-handicapper” on his way to 81-3-67, for 41 points , and the division 1 men’s stableford honours.

Seven prospective members were welcomed at the women’s Have A Go Day on Monday.

The “newbies” enjoyed a nine-hole ambrose and four of them were in the winning team.

Ladies club captain Viv Bell outlined what was available for them and said she hoped to see them again.

Te Puia SpringsTHERE is a meeting at 10.30am on Sunday, followed by a club haggle from 12.30pm.

VeteransDIVERSITY proved the theme of the day as 49 players converged on Mahia Golf Club for the Gisborne-East Coast Veteran Golfers’ Society competition on Tuesday.

Six of the district’s eight clubs were represented and entrants included 11 vet women, producing one of the most eclectic fields to grace a GEC vets’ competition.

Lorraine Haisman was the top points-scorer in the stableford. The Patutahi member had 42 points, two clear of Gisborne Park’s Phil Simpson, and Poverty Bay duo Don McFadyen and Alan Destry.

Players enjoyed beautiful East Coast weather, with a sea breeze keeping them comfortable and helping the vets’ flag fly impressively over the clubhouse.

However, Mahia is a challenge even in the best of conditions.

The fairways are fairly generous in width but the rough is merciless, and plenty went reaching into their bags for a replacement ball over the duration of their round.

The society held its AGM after play. They went briskly through the usual formalities.

Retiring member Arthur Bacon was thanked for his service on the committee over the last few years, as was Colin Sowerby, who has audited the accounts for the last 15 years.

Prize-giving and supper followed.

Mahia’s Tom Hema received special mention for his one-man band performance that included taking entries, sorting out fours, conducting the prize-giving, telling jokes and an a capella performance of Wonderful World.
