BITTER defeat. Sweet victory.

Mark Stewart got to experience both over the weekend.

Stewart was knocked out of the junior men’s club championship on Saturday, going down 2 and 1 to Bill Simpson.

He returned on Sunday to win the final of the Covid-19-affected Reynolds Cup handicap matchplay series.

Stewart beat Dave Mettrick on the 14th hole in a match he said was closer than the end result suggested.

Mettrick led 1-up after six holes but Stewart proceeeded to win almost all of the holes up to where they shook hands.

Modest in victory, Stewart said “a couple of lucky putts” helped.

But the 16.7 handicap-indexed player’s card, which included four pars from the eighth to 14th holes, were indicative of a solid performance Mettrick (13.5 index) could not match.

It was water off a duck’s back for Thomas Donovan in last Thursday’s competition.

Donovan was among the hardy souls who battled the wet weather in round 1 of the Thursday Throne series.

He responded sensationally, with a 3-under par 69, including five birdies — one of those a two — to win the round with a +4 total.

Anthony Pahina led a Electrinet Park battalion who ventured down the road for a round after rain forced the closure of their course.

Pahina won the division 1 men’s stableford with 79-9-70, for 38 points.

Joe Bryden’s division 2-winning 40 was the best round of the day.

Miggles Shanks led her President’s team to victory over Viv Bell’s Captain’s team in their Burke Cup clash yesterday.
