Poverty BayIT’S down to the last eight in the Barns-Graham Cup men’s pairs and the schools of thought are varied as to who will emerge triumphant.

There are those picking Peter Goodwin and Mark Cameron.

“Goodie” is a former Poverty Bay-East Coast representative now batting off a 24-handicap.

The 71-year-old was a bit sheepish about that after he and Cameron ousted top seeds Marc Armstrong and John Pittar 2 and 1 in round 2 on Saturday.

But having returned to the game in 2018 after a season off, he could point out that he shot 104.

Others believe it is going to the year of father and son Vance and Nick Richardson.

The Richardsons blew away Brent Colbert and Mark Barker in round 1 — combining for an opening nine net total of 26 — and only needed 14 holes to dismiss Mark Karalus and Don Wright in round 2.

Veterans Cliff Poole and Colin Christie have their backers. Christie is no stranger to BG success while 15-handicapper Poole is one of the most consistent players in the club. Their 4 and 3 defeat of Ken White and Brad Morgan was a good scalp.

George Brown and Don Griffin are lurking in the background. Brown, in particular, has been in impressive form, including a 1-over 73 on June 28. The pair put away Warwick Thompson and Robin Wells 3 and 2 to stay alive.

John Kerekere and Phil Grogan cruised into the quarters, dismissing two-time BG champion Ron Young and Nigel Jones 4 and 3.

An in-form Dave Jenkins birdied the 14th and 15th holes as he and Mark Norman beat Stefan Andreassen and Dave Pirimona 5 and 3.

David Situ took bragging rights over father Jimmy in their family duel. Situ junior and Ewan Atherton knocked out Jimmy and Bernie Rothschild 2 and 1.

Alex Kirkpatrick and Pete Graham remain in the hunt after a 3 and 2 win over Glenn Burnside and Tene Goldsmith.

A birdie cost Simon Jeune a 100 percent par performance in Sunday’s stableford, but he wasn’t complaining.

Jeune had 17 pars and one birdie — on the 12th — in his 1-under 71-3-68, for 40 points, which won him division 1.

Jan Utting won the overall individual stableford and was a member of the winning team in the Eagles/Murray Halberg competitions held on Tuesday and yesterday.

SeniorsGISBORNE East Coast Veteran Golfers’ Society’s next tournament will be something a little different.

The format will be three-man drawn team ambrose, with each team comprising a low, medium and higher-handicapped player.

Each team member will have to count six drives, meaning careful selection and added pressure towards the end of the round.

Player of the year points will be up for grabs, correlating to a team’s placing.

The tournament is at Poverty Bay on Tuesday, July 10, and tee-off is from 9.30am.

With the last GEC veterans’ tournament called off due to the weather, the Player of the Year standings remain the same after four rounds.

Te Puia Springs vet Peter Harrison leads on 28 points, with Mike Orford (Poverty Bay) second on 15 and clubmate Frank Ball and Gisborne Park’s Brian Lumsden-Nicholls third-equal on 14.

The GEC vets’ committee are busy preparing for the annual vets’ men’s and women’s open tournament. Entry forms should be available from August. Volunteers to help with the tournament are welcome.

Contact president John Fricker, vice-president Phil Simpson, treasurer Colin Christie or committee members Arthur Bacon, Steve Williams, Dallas Atkins and John Aitchison.

The New Zealand vets’ championship is at Cambridge Golf Club from December 3 to 7.
