Gisborne ParkKUDOS to the Park women who took on the winter elements in club championship qualifying on Sunday.

A small but hardy group chasing 2018 honours endured the drowned rat weather to sort out the seedings for the senior, intermediate and junior titles.

Defending champion Jo Kerr earned herself a place in the final by topping the senior qualifying with 89 off the stick.

She faces the winner of the semifinal between Wiki Morrissey and Carney Pipi.

Reigning intermediate champion Jean Foot has a semifinal against Sue Maisey, who she beat in the 2017 final.

The other semi pits 2017 junior champion Mihi Marino against Jacque Akuhata.

Marino’s intermediate promotion means a new junior champion will be crowned. Vying for that honour are Alayna Watene, Penny Shaw, Kath Papuni, Margaret Alley and Ann Richardson.

Ray Walford broke 80 for the first time since April of last year to win the Tuesday veteran men’s stableford last week. Walford shot 79-14-65, for 43 points.

Poverty BayGREENKEEPER William Brown placated a winter beast of a course to set the pace in round 1 of the Dodgshun Cup gross series on Saturday.

While Brown is a sweet striker of the ball and distance is not usually an issue for him, the championship course he helped produce bore sharp teeth.

He left the course nursing a couple of bite marks, courtesy of four dropped shots in the last four holes, but put together a solid 4-over 76 considering the conditions, including birdies on all three par-5s.

It gave him the division 1 round 1 lead, three strokes ahead of Peter Clayton. Glenn Burnside topped division 2 with 85, one clear of Neil Mackie, and Basil Payne’s 93 was the best of the division 3 players.

Round 2 is this Saturday.

Graeme Eriksen went through a rough period of eight consecutive rounds of golf without a par. He had only one in last Thursday’s stableford but it was enough to help him to a division 2 victory with 103-34-69, for 39 points, the round of the day.

Dave Pirimona shrugged off conditions that had most Sunday morning golf regulars remaining under the bed covers to win the division 2 stableford with an impressive blue tees effort of 85-16-39, for 39 points.

Wednesday — LGU, silver division: J Utting 89-16-73.

MahiaBad weather was the winner last weekend.

It is understood a trio of players braved the conditions to play nine holes but no cards were submitted.

There is a LGU round for women this weekend while the men have round 2 of their four-ball best-ball.

WaikohuPERCY Milner was in the winner’s circle again, this time in the all-in stableford, his 89-24-65, for 41 points, heading off Larry Green on countback.

SUNDAY — All-in stableford: P Milner 41, L Green 41, K Tamanui 38, M Tuapawa 30.

COMING UP: SATURDAY, interclub competition at Opotiki, 12 noon tee-off; SUNDAY, club competition, men’s club championships, women’s singles.

VeteransPETER Harrison’s lead on the Gisborne East Coast Veteran Golfers’ Society’s Player of the Year standings has been cut substantially.

Harrison did not play in the July event — a three-man ambrose — which opened the door for others to reduce the deficit.

His 13-point advantage in the race for the McGregor Trophy has been nearly halved by Dave Mettrick and Bernie Rothschild, thanks to Rothschild being in the winning ambrose team and Mettrick being part of the runners-up.

Harrison leads the standings on 28 points, with Mettrick and Rothschild second-equal on 22 and four players on 21 — Frank Ball, Steve Williams, Barry Cox and Evan Parkin.

The next event is a par round at Poverty Bay on Tuesday, August 14, from 9,30am. Players are urged to report to starter Colin Sowerby 15 minutes before tee-off.

A small group of GEC vets are off to Ohope next week for an “unofficial” match against Bay of Plenty counterparts.

Mettrick organised the trip as a substitute for the annual Shark Trophy GEC v BoP fixture which was unable to be played for this year.

GEC vets have bid a warm farewell to past president Nigel McGregor and wife Sue, who are headed to Carterton to be nearer to family.

Entry forms are out for the Sean Shivnan Pharmacy 2018 Senior Men’s and Women’s Golf Open at Poverty Bay Golf Club in November.

The men have a strokeplay round on Sunday, November 4, for the Endeavour Cup (for players aged 55 to 69) and the Discovery Salver (70yrs and over).

That is followed by matchplay from Monday, Nov 5, to Wednesday, Nov 7, in groups of eight seeded on handicap.

The women have three rounds of stableford competition from the Monday to Wednesday and a nine-hole tournament will be played concurrently.

For further information, contact John Fricker at 022-658-4784 or pbseniors@outlook.com, Brigit McIldowie 867-7885 or Dave Keown at the golf club on 867-4402.

Tolaga BayTHERE was no play on Sunday. The men’s club championships are this Sunday.
