Poverty BayGREENKEEPER William Brown placated a winter beast of a course to set the pace in round 1 of the Dodgshun Cup gross series on Saturday.
While Brown is a sweet striker of the ball and distance is not usually an issue for him, the championship course he helped produce bore sharp teeth.
He left the course nursing a couple of bite marks, courtesy of four dropped shots in the last four holes, but put together a solid 4-over 76 considering the conditions, including birdies on all three par-5s.
It gave him the division 1 round 1 lead, three strokes ahead of Peter Clayton. Glenn Burnside topped division 2 with 85, one clear of Neil Mackie, and Basil Payne’s 93 was the best of the division 3 players.
Round 2 is this Saturday.
Graeme Eriksen went through a rough period of eight consecutive rounds of golf without a par. He had only one in last Thursday’s stableford but it was enough to help him to a division 2 victory with 103-34-69, for 39 points, the round of the day.
Dave Pirimona shrugged off conditions that had most Sunday morning golf regulars remaining under the bed covers to win the division 2 stableford with an impressive blue tees effort of 85-16-39, for 39 points.

VeteransPETER Harrison’s lead on the Gisborne East Coast Veteran Golfers’ Society’s Player of the Year standings has been cut substantially.
Harrison did not play in the July event — a three-man ambrose — which opened the door for others to reduce the deficit.
His 13-point advantage in the race for the McGregor Trophy has been nearly halved by Dave Mettrick and Bernie Rothschild, thanks to Rothschild being in the winning ambrose team and Mettrick being part of the runners-up.
Harrison leads the standings on 28 points, with Mettrick and Rothschild second-equal on 22 and four players on 21 — Frank Ball, Steve Williams, Barry Cox and Evan Parkin.
The next event is a par round at Poverty Bay on Tuesday, August 14, from 9,30am. Players are urged to report to starter Colin Sowerby 15 minutes before tee-off.
A small group of GEC vets are off to Ohope next week for an “unofficial” match against Bay of Plenty counterparts.
Mettrick organised the trip as a substitute for the annual Shark Trophy GEC v BoP fixture which was unable to be played for this year.
GEC vets have bid a warm farewell to past president Nigel McGregor and wife Sue, who are headed to Carterton to be nearer to family.
Entry forms are out for the Sean Shivnan Pharmacy 2018 Senior Men’s and Women’s Golf Open at Poverty Bay Golf Club in November.
