The Poverty Bay Bowling Club men’s and women’s open pairs champions achieved their titles the hard way at the weekend.

Jan Powell (skip) and Kathryn Flaugere won the women’s pairs and skip George Vaotuua and Steve Jenkins won the men’s title.

The championships were run using the two-life format. Both teams started Sunday’s play with two lives intact but lost their provisional final.

However, they then won the actual final.

Runners-up Jessie Davis-Law (s) and Karen Pinn in the women’s section, and Steve Berezowski (s) and Les Whittington in the men’s, made the closing stages of the tournament a real contest, which was thoroughly enjoyed by club members and other supporters.
