Joan Gledhill joined Glenys Whiteman’s team as a late replacement for an ill team member last weekend and was rewarded with her first senior centre title.

The team of Whiteman, Del Tamanui, Karen Pinn and Gledhill won the trophy for the Ella Gibson women’s open fours in a close competition that was decided on points differentials.

Carol Hawes (skip), Dianne Phillips, Ginny Sherriff and Kym Brown were runners-up in the tournament, which was played as a round robin at the Kahutia Bowling Club.

The five teams taking part each played four games and had a bye.

Whiteman and Hawes both had three wins and a loss. Hawes beat Whiteman 13-11 but then lost 14-9 to the team skipped by Anita Vaotuua.

Boon McIlroy’s team won the Peace Shield for men’s open fours, contested by six teams at Te Karaka.

This tournament, too, was played as a round robin over one and a half days.

McIlroy’s team lost their first game — July Hoepo’s team beat them 12-10 — then won their remaining four matches convincingly.

Andrew Ball played consistently at lead and Arthur Hawes, playing at two, put in some good shots when they were needed, while McIlroy and director Malcolm Trowell were outstanding.

Trowell is an astute reader of the head and McIlroy played some excellent shots to keep their opponents at bay.

Clear runners-up were the team of Paddy Stewart (skip), David File, John Dawson and Steve Goldsbury, who had three wins.

The teams skipped by July Hoepo and Vern Alder each had two wins and a draw.
